When is Science Fiction not Science Fiction

I am reading Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro which features cloning and organ donation. A reviewer states that it is not Science Fiction and I can understand the dilema.

The trouble is that when most people think of SF they think of Star Trek, Star Wars and maybe even Doctor Who. However SF is a very broad genre. If fact I think that there is a good argument to say that it reflects all the other genres in fiction within itself.

Science Fiction/Western = Outland
Science Fiction/Love Story = Somewhere in Time
Science Fiction/Fairy tale = Star Wars

And there are certainly plenty of others.

  1. Ah the complications of the hybrid genre. Very interesting stuff!

Reflecting on this ancient blog post I think that the thing that annoys me most is the ‘NOT’ Science Fiction.
